I came across 100% Pure in my search for an all natural sunscreen/moisturizer. The brand's products are completely plant and vegetable based and entirely what I wanted to include in my beauty routine.

I ordered the Pomegranate Antioxidant Hydration w/SPF 20 and have been thoroughly pleased w/the results. Unlike a few other 'all natural' sunscreens I've tested, Pure's is creamy and blends perfectly, w/out excess shine-age. Beautiful.

As the cold winter chill suddenly turned into a warm summer breeze, I decided it was prime time to amp up my green thumb. I came across a great local nursery where I found my young jalapeno plant and got to work on my windowsill herb and spice patch.

Within weeks of repotting the seedlings, flowers began to bloom and my excitement may've resembled that of a new mother. Surely enough, our first baby jalapeno was born.

Lil' JP #1 is now almost full grown and his baby sister is catching right up. And I am ripe with anticipation of enjoying my very own fresh jalapeno!

Beauty and the Beast

So, up in Hudson, NY, somewhere between the bottle of red wine, the incredible steak w/marchand sauce, and the hot toddys, I school some friends on the beast that lies within many of our fave beauty products, and we conclude I am a product junkie.

OK, fine. Maybe, but more than anything, I've become obsessed with finding products that do more than throw some cool, trendy key words on their packaging. I want natural and affordable.

Enter: Environmental Working Groups's Cosmetic Safety Database. Now, I am not saying this is the end-all-be-all, Encyclopedia Brittanica for beauty advice, and as some say, they may be fear mongers, but I'd rather be safe than sorry, and informed and cautious. The database offers product rankings based on ingredients listed on product packaging and any known health hazards that may be linked to the ingredients. The 0-10 scale ranks products from Low to High Hazard.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I no longer use traditional shampoo and have been no-poo-ing with baking soda for some months now.

After years of faithful use, I've recently switched from my Aveeno Daily Scrub for an all natural Dea Sea Black Mud cleansing bar from Soap for Goodness Sake. Why? you may ask. Answer:

EWG Cosmetic Safety Database Rating:
Aveeno: 6 (moderate hazardous)
...and contains 17 ingredients, only 2 of which are natural
Soap For Goodness Sake: 0 (low hazard)
...and only contains 8 ingredients, 100% au naturel

At $7 a bar, which will easily last over a year, and minimal packaging/waste, compared to Aveeno's $17 a chemical-filled pop, and excess cardboard, plastic, etc waste, why go back?

Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer SPF 30 also ranks 6. I have been on the hunt but have yet to find an affordable and natural moisturizer-sunscreen that I am happy with.

But... that's not to say I am all negative Nancy when it comes to Aveeno. I love, love, love the super thick and creamy Aveeno Active Naturals Daily Moisturizing Lotion. And with a EWG Cosmetic Safety ranking of 2, this will continue to be my source for soft, ash-free skin!

Conscious Cycle is a filmed interactive art event that brings artists and community members together in an effort to explore, educate, and learn about Conscious living and life's Cyclical nature.

Conscious Cycle consists of the following: We reclaim discarded wood, build a wall out of it and invite artists to paint the wall, one after the other, while being filmed for a time-lapse movie. Mural themes revolve around Consciousness and Cycles. Throughout the event djs play music, dancers perform, internal artists like yogis and tai chi practitioners teach and demonstrate, artists collaborate, and community members are encouraged to interact with the materials and us.

Three years old, this 8th Conscious Cycle goes down on Roosevelt Island's Riverwalk Commons Saturday, July 31st and Sunday, August 1st from 12pm to 5pm. It'll be full of conscious good times, suitable for all ages and it's free. Please join in and explore your creativity. Plus we like to dance and the music is always great, come get down to the sights and sounds.

Hair News - Baking Soda

If you are ultra eco and whatnots, perhaps this isn't news to you. My mom swears by using baking soda as a face wash, which I am about to turn to after coming across this on the Environmental Working Group website: http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/

Howevers, I recently noticed hair goop even after a fresh wash. After doing some research, I realized oil and product can accumulate in your hair and your shampoo is partially to blame! WTF? So, a bit more research and I find that baking soda is like the miracle cleaning and beauty agent on the scene.

Here's whats up: a small dallop of baking soda mixed w/water to make a pasty concoction. Massage that onto your dome, concentrating on the scalp, and rinse. Condition as usual and ta-dow! Fresh, shiny locks con no mas goop.

I am trying to ween myself off of store-bought shampoo, sunscreen, face and body wash - trying to keep my chemical intake to a minimum... Stay posted!

Smooth, Creamy, Decadent

Why, its Vanilla Panna Cotta, of course! Jewelz asked for it, so here it is, adapted from Food and Wine Mag:

Ingredients
1 envelope unflavored gelatin (2 1/4 teaspoons)
2 tablespoons cold water
1 cup heavy cream
1/3 cup sugar
1 vanilla bean, split, seeds scraped
One 16-ounce tub of Greek yogurt

Directions
Place cold water in a small bowl and sprinkle the gelatin over; let it stand until softened for about 5 minutes.

In a small saucepan, bring the cream, sugar, and vanilla bean and seeds to a simmer. Turn off the heat and stir in the gelatin; keep stirring until the gelatin is fully melted.

Whisk the yogurt in a large bowl until smooth, then gradually whisk in the vanilla cream. Divide the mixture among six 1/2 cup ramekins. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours, until set.

Feel free to top w/fresh fruits, garnish w/mint leaves, or whip up a fresh & tasty pomegranate or rhubarb syrup...

I Loves Body Scrubs

So... I know I have NO business going to spas right now, but, its Spa Wk so I have little choice in the matter.

After reading rave reviews on Tribeca Spa of Tranquility, I book an appt for a body scrub. My skin has been peeling like crazy after way too much sun during recent travels.

The people at TSoS were great. The atmosphere was serene and peaceful. And most importantly, everything was clean. Not clinical and drab. But tasteful and comfortable.

Their body scrubs aren't the usual homemade concoction of sea salt, coffee, buttermilk pancakes, etc. Instead, they use special cloths designed for maximum exfoliation, in order to bring out that fresh, beautiful glow and buttery soft skin. I loved it and will be a cheapskate spa wk regular.

Sunday Brunch till 3pm. Buffet style. Not your average buffet packed w/oversized patrons filling up on buckets of tasteless matter for all hours of the day. Rather, a lovely selection of Sri Lankan dishes, beautifully served up fresh in earthenware pots. Some meat, some seafood, some veg. All amazing. Perfect parsley sambol and fabulous coconut sambol - easy now, its like sweet, savory fire. Too hot? Cool down your palate w/a dallop of yogurt.

Fresh tasty pappadums. Flan when you finish.

One of the best eateries in NYC. You have my word. Don't be dumb. Do it.

This is neither fashion, food, or photo oriented, but this does fall into the "other highly important things like such as" category, for sure. All of a sudden, them damn pollens just bombarded and if you're like me, it SUCKS. Eyes are red, itchy, and watery. Sneeze x 5.

So, last year when I first succumbed to these seasonal allergies, a friend suggested Nasal Ease. Perfect for me as I tend not to be much of a pill popper. Nasal Ease is all natural - just like Fruity Pebbles tasting Momma's Milk!

You'll need to re-apply every few hrs but its minty fresh and temporarily relieves allergy symptoms. Careful though - its a powder spray. White powder. Be sure to check yo'self in a looking glass lest you end up looking like a cokie.

The Magic of Balinese Cooking

Today, friends, I will share with you one Balinese treasure: Sambal Matah (translation - raw sambal)

This amazing goodness can be paired with fish or chicken. It is served over tuna in the pic.

To start, marinate the tuna steaks in soy sauce for five mins. In the meantime, chop hot red and green chilis, shallots, lemongrass, & a piece of ginger and mix this all with a dash of salt, white pepper, and oil. Cut a slice of lime (preferably kefir lime, if poss) and squeeze over the chopped goodness and mix.

Pan-fry the tuna for about five mins. Remove from heat and top w/the chopped mix. It should look and smell fabulous!

Lesson One, Gentlemen:

A woman dining along IS NOT YOUR OPEN INVITATION to join her.

While happily enjoying my newfound free afternoon time at Cafe Lafayette, a suited up gentleman walks in & introduces himself to the waitress. I think to myself, "interesting, some kind of appointment?"

Next, he says, "Hi, How are you?" and since I am busy minding my own business, I can't even determine who he was speaking to. Besides the waitress and cooks, this gentleman and I are the only ones in the cafe. In an awkward attempt to not leave this man hanging, in the event he was directing his question to me, I look up and smile.

Then, he introduces himself to ME! Now, I am a germaphobe and my food has just arrived, but again, in my 2nd attempt to not leave this, now not so gentle, man hanging, I offer my hand and respond w/my name. To which he replies, "What did you order?" No big deal. I kindly tell him I got the burger w/blue cheese and carmelized onions. Feeling carnivorous today...

What does he do next? To my astonishment, this ungentleman tells the waitress he will join me! Of course, my face must have read, "WTF?!"

Now since I've fallen prey to this type of invasion before, I quickly respond letting him know I am busy working (the cafe has free WIFI, thank god!).

As if this tiny cafe can hold anymore tension, throughout the meal, Mr. Ungentle continues to make small talk w/both me and the waitress. I am appalled.

To add even more excitement to the mix, at one point he picks up his phone and starts his legal talk - "my clients, the jury," blah, blah, blah I am so important I invade people's personal space just cause I rock a suit...

The moral of the story: context clues, gentlemen. Read between the lines. Body language. Take notice and never, ever invade.
